North Vancouver Statistics
Overlooking Burrard Inlet, backed by the Coast Mountains is some of the Lower Mainlands best scenery. This area has most everything, alpine wilderness, canyons, rivers, ski facilities and great shopping. North Vancouver was incorporated in 1891 and became a city in 1907. Its waterfront was one of the first on the Lower Mainland to be developed and still remains a very active port area. The early sawmills of the 1860s are long gone, and the area is now mainly residential and recreational. Both the city and the district are well established areas, with lots of trees and west coast flavoured homes.
The City of North Vancouver is a dynamic urban municipality, comprised of a mix of specialty shopping, thriving commercial areas, and diverse housing opportunities, as well as being a key transportation node and a major maritime centre. The City of North Vancouver, along with the District of West Vancouver and the District of North Vancouver, make up the geographic area known as Vancouver's North Shore. North Vancouver City boasts an employment amount that exceeds the resident labour force. Indeed, the North Shore Region is one of only two regions in Greater Vancouver where future employment is projected to grow at a faster rate than population growth. Historically, the City core was the first North Shore area to develop as a service area for the burgeoning pre-World War I logging and sawmilling operations set up on the North Shore. Access in the late 1800s and early 1900s was limited to boats and a ferry system. Lonsdale Avenue, the present main north-south connector, maintains its role as a major transportation connector and a significant economic area. Recent work with heritage buildings in the area indicate that there are significant opportunities to develop business ventures while working within a highly valued historical context.
