Yellowknife was the capital of the Northwest Territories until
1999. Yellowknife has lots to offer both residents and visitors. There are restaurants
featuring a wide variety of menu items, including Arctic char. Although many communities
in the North are under some form of liquor rationing, or even full prohibition,
Yellowknife has a number of pubs and lounges. The Bush Pilot's Brew Pub is the first micro
brewery in the Northwest Territories and is located in the historic section of Yellowknife
called Old Town.
For many residents, the highlight of the year is Caribou Carnival. The highlight
of the carnival is the Canadian Championship Dog Derby, which sees teams of the world's
finest sled dogs competing in a 240 km (150 mile) race across the frozen Great Slave Lake.
