The multi-lane highways allow 90 minutes traveling time to the area. Peterborough and the Kawartha Lakes is much more than the thousands of square miles of sparkling lakes and lush, green forest that have become the hallmark of this unspoiled region. It is the people - warm and wonderful - with their diverse cultural pursuits, respect for nature and love of recreation that make Peterborough a desirable place to work and to live. A place to call "HOME". Peterborough is still small enough to go home for lunch. Peterborough is our 10 minute town. Whether you are downtown or in the country, you can be to the other side of this city in...10 minutes.

Peterborough, Ontario

Peterborough is located in Central Ontario and is nested in the heart of the Kawartha Lakes. Kawartha is an Aboriginal word meaning "happy lands and shining waters" and has been used for over a century to attract tourists to this area.

Surrounded by natural beauty, Peterborough is within a 60 minute drive from Toronto to the northeast and only minutes away from forests, lakes and quiet streams. It is no wonder this makes for an ideal vacation spot.

For those who travel by boat, Peterborough is the home of the world's highest hydraulic Lift Lock, which was built in 1904. The Lift Lock is one of many locks on the Trent Severn Waterway which links Lake Ontario at Trenton to Georgian Bay in Lake Heron at Port Severn. The Waterway takes you through some of the most beautiful country in Central Ontario.

Peterborough offers much to it's visitors though local history at the Peterborough Centennial Museum & Archives where you can get a sense of the struggles and triumphs of the people who settled in this area. Hutchison House traces the history of Peterborough's first doctor with a living history interpretation. The Canadian Canoe Museum demonstrates that Peterborough was indeed the "canoe capital of Canada".

There's more business going on in Peterborough, Ontario - a community of 125,000 people, 90 minutes northeast of Toronto - than its sleepy pastoral setting would suggest. Peterborough, voted #1 in the top places for business in Ontario because of our affordability or lower operating costs, the lower cost of living, things to do and see and our low crime rate. 2 of Peterborough's largest employers, General Electric and PepsiCo's Quaker division, have added manufacturing and food processing jobs and 5 new call centres have opened up since 2000. Peterborough's unemployment rate has decreased from 9.2% to 4.2% from between 2002 and 2003. Recently, Trent University and Fleming College have had a government financial boost towards their DNA cluster research which would spin-off 5,50 jobs over the next 10-25 years.
