Moving Tips

Moving to a new home is very exciting, but can be very hectic also.  To make this process as painless as possible you should hire a mover.   You should speak with several companies and get quotes from each.  Be sure to ask about the fee structure: flat rate or hourly.

Once you've chosen a mover, you should have a representative come to your house to see what will be moved.  Tell the mover what types of things you will be packing yourself so he know what supplies to bring.

You can save money by packing your own things, but remember that you will need the proper supplies and time.  It is estimated that it will take two people approximately three full days to pack the contents of a three bedroom home.  Between the time spent and the money spent on supplies, it may not save you much.  There are some items that you will have to move yourself: jewelry, currency and important papers.

When the movers come, you should walk around the house with the supervisor as he makes the inventory list.  Give him any specific instructions for items.  For instance if you want your cookware immediately, have them pack it last so it comes off the truck first.

When goods arrive at your new house, mark each item off the inventory list as it is off loaded.  This will give you better accountability when you sign for the receipt of goods.
